General advice for patients with venous problems

The main aim is to avoid the pooling of blood in the leg as this leads to congestion of the veins causing varicose veins, swollen legs, eventually leg ulcers and may increase the risks of thrombosis.

Sitting or standing for long periods of time is not good as the calf muscles are not pumping the blood out of the leg. It is better to lie down with the legs elevated above the heart (put a few bricks under the foot of the bed) or to walk around. Both of these encourage the blood to flow back to the heart.

If you have to sit or stand for long periods then bending the ankle up and down will cause the calf muscles to act and help pump the blood out of the legs.

In hot climates the varicose veins will become more prominent and the ankles will swell more. Avoid getting your legs too hot and elevate them as much as possible.

Try to keep your weight under control by eating the right things and eating less of them.

If all of these simple measures do not help then you may need to wear compression stockings or undergo surgical treatment.
