Local treatment - iontophoresis

Inotophoresis is defined as the topical introduction of drugs (such as glycopyrronium bropmide) into the skin using direct electric current. Iontophoresis with simple tap water alone is also successful in many patients.

The exact mechanism is unclear and may be related to blockage of the sweat duct without damaging it.

The effected part is soaked in the solution containing the drug and an electric current passed for up to 30 minutes. The effect is immediate and lasts 3-4 days. The treatment is repeated regularly.

Pregnancy, pacemakers and metal implants are contraindications to treatment.

Machines are available for home use and companies can be found on the internet. An example is www.stdpharm.co.uk
