Anatomy of leg arteries

The following diagram shows the anatomy of the leg arteries. Only those for the left leg are shown - the right leg arteries are exactly the same from the iliac arteries down. These carry blood to the tissues of the leg.

The aorta comes from the heart and in the lower abdomen splits into 2 common iliac arteries. Each one of these splits into the internal iliac artery (for the pelvis and buttocks) and the external iliac artery which continues into the groin and changes name to the common femoral artery.

In the groin this artery splits into the profunda femoris (for the thigh) and the superficial femoral artery. The superficial femoral artery changes name behind the knee to become the popliteal artery. This carries blood to the lower leg as 3 named arteries (the anterior and posterior tibial arteries continue into the foot and the peroneal artery which stops at the ankle).
