Carotid endarterectomy - video

This edited video of the operation shows the essential steps. It is necessarily quick to enable faster download - unfortunately this means poorer resolution. The initial steps of the operation involve making a skin cut, dissecting down to the jugular vein and dividing one of the big veins that crosses the arteries.

The carotid arteries are then dissected and isolated by coloured rubber 'sloops'. In this video the common carotid artery is in the green sloop, the external carotid in the white sloop and the internal carotid in the red sloop.

Clamps are then applied before the artery is opened with a knife and then scissors. The atheroma inside is removed carefully using a special instrument.

The gap in the artery is being closed with a dacron patch (polyester material available sterile 'off the shelf').

The clamps are finally removed and any residual holes stitched to stop the bleeding.
