Sapheno-popliteal junction and short saphenous vein

The veins will be marked before the operation, sometimes this may need to be done in the x-ray department.

The sapheno-popliteal junction is approached through a 1-2 inch incision at the back of the knee. The junction is identified and tied.

The short saphenous vein can be pulled out in segments (sequential avulsion) or inversion stripped. Avulsions are carried out as described in the section on the long saphenous vein. The leg is then dressed and bandaged for 1 week.
