Systemic treatment

Drugs can be taken by mouth that block the chemical transmission in the nerves that supply the sweat glands. The effect is not limited to sweat glands alone as sympathetic nerves in the whole body will also be affected - causing side effects such as dry mouth, blurred vision and difficulty passing urine. For this reason many patients cannot tolerate these drugs.
Some clinicians have reported success with Robinul (glycopyrronium bromide 2mg three times a day) - unfortunately this is quite expensive and available from the United States only.
In those patients where anxiety is the main triggering factor for sweating, sedating anti-anxiety drugs may be useful.
