Surgery

Surgery for the parathyroids is very similar to the thyroid. Click here to see thyroid surgery.

The incision is the same, as is the initial dissection to move the thyroid forwards. The recurrent laryngeal nerves have to be looked for and preserved.

Usually a single parathyroid adenoma will be found:

The thyroid gland has been pulled to the left and the parathyroid adenoma can be seen

The wound is closed as in thyroid surgery.

Blood tests the following day will confirm if the calcium levels have returned to normal.

For complications of surgery see the section in thyroid surgery.
